- After working as a head sommelier at a top restaurant in New York, Chicago-born Brad Hickey wandered the globe until settling in McLaren Vale. Over the past several years he's been producing wines with a distinct character and sense of place. This amphora Nero d'Avola (a drought tolerant variety native to Sicily) was aged on skins and seeds for 6 months in locally made clay amphora (a big 200 litre clay pot lined with beeswax). Gorgeous and complex! Nice work Mr Hickey... or should we say, Mr Higgins:
“Lighter ruby in colour, with hints of black cherry, Indian spices and stem ginger. Orange peel also present which is usual in this wine. Reminiscent of a Negroni cocktail, angostura bitters and all. A pomegranate, bright dark raspberry and morello cherry mid-palate balanced by a refreshing sweet and sour red cherry acidity. The wine finishes with fine grained, chain link tannins as well as some savouriness. Decanting is always recommended for amphora wines” – Brad Hickey, winemaker
